A man awaiting execution for the murders of four men at a Blockbuster Video Store in Anniston has died.
Defense attorneys say 50-year-old Donald Ray Wheat died yesterday at Holman Prison near Atmore.
They say Wheat apparently died of natural causes on death row, but the Department of Corrections has ordered an autopsy.
Prison officials declined immediate comment, but testimony at a sentencing hearing last year showed Wheat was suffering from a fatal liver disease.
Wheat was convicted and sentenced to die last year in the Blockbuster slayings.
Authorities say they killings were part of a two-state crime spree that included the murder of a convenience store owner in Bowdon, Georgia.
