OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - A 12-year-old student in Opelika was placed in juvenile detention Thursday after authorities said he brought a loaded semiautomatic handgun to school.
Opelika Police Captain Alan Elkins said the fifth-grader smuggled the nine millimeter pistol in his backpack and had threatened at least two students.
The boy -- facing expulsion from West Forest Intermediate School
-- was charged with illegal possession of a weapon on a school campus. He was taken to the Lee County Youth Development Center.
According to Elkins, a classmate told school administrators about the weapon.
Investigators are trying to determine who owns the pistol.
