Medicare Drug Cards

Monday's the first day seniors can sign up for drug discount cards under Medicare.

The Bush administration says the cards will save seniors an average of 17 percent for name brand drugs and up to 30 percent for generics.

Medicare began posting drug prices on its Web site last week, allowing people to compare the cards and decide which offered the best price on the drugs they use.

Critics say seniors can get similar prices, without discounts, through online pharmacies. They say seniors can save even more money by buying their drugs from Canadian pharmacies.

They also say the cards aren't fair because the companies can change the discount every week, while seniors are locked into the card they chose for a year.

Alabamians who are not Internet-savvy can get the same information by calling 1-800-Medicare or visiting their county's State Health Insurance Assistance Program office.
