Updated: Wed 10:26 AM, Aug 14, 2002

The trial is under way in Jacksonville for seven men who hit it big in McDonald's promotional games.

Prosecutors said their fortune was part of a multimillion-dollar scam. But the defense said the men were tricked into claiming the prizes.

The case drew national attention last year. FBI agents from across the country spent hundreds of hours listening to secretly recorded phone calls and collecting other evidence before and after the initial arrests.

An Alabama man, 49-year-old William Mikey Thomas of Eclectic was among those indicted.

The defendants are among 56 people charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud in the case. The mail fraud charges are related to the "winners" sending their tickets and receiving their winnings through the mail.
