BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The FBI says it's still investigating the 1966 shooting death of a black man in Alabaster by a former state trooper from Geneva county who's already charged with murder in another Alabama civil-rights era death.

FBI officials said Monday they are seeking information in the May 8, 1966 death of 34-year-old Nathan Johnson. He was fatally shot by James Bonard Fowler at the Alabaster Police Department after being arrested for suspicion of drunken driving.

News accounts at the time quoted authorities as saying Johnson had grabbed a billy club and was attacking Fowler when the officer shot him.

Fowler has said he acted in self-defense in the February 1965 shooting death of Jimmy Lee Jackson at Marion. Fowler awiats trial on a murder charge in that case.
