Wiregrass authorities say they now have a drug kingpin off the streets. It’s believed that Steven Shipes was a large supplier in the crystal-methamphetamine trade across the Tri-States. The 48-year-old Slocomb man faces a host of felony charges.
Shipes was taken into custody following a joint investigation by the Geneva County Sheriff's Department and Slocomb Police. More than a year-ago, firefighters fought a blaze at Shipes’ Sausage Company in Slocomb. Authorities say he continued to use the building and several surrounding structures for the manufacture of meth.
Large quantities of the finished product and the chemicals used to make it were allegedly found there. In addition, Slocomb Police Chief David Land displayed two stolen Harley-Davidson motorcycles reportedly found at Shipes' home.
Shipes is being held without bond. He's been transferred to the Conecuh County Jail in Evergreen. Authorities expect additional charges will be filed against him.
