Kinston School now has a new way to protect their students.
Security cameras have been installed and administrators are talking about the new addition.
Security cameras are crucial for keeping intruders out and making sure students are following the rules.
For less than $5,000, Kinston High School Principal Terry Weeks can now keep an eye on all the hallways at once.
“The security cameras have really increased our ability as a school to offer our students a more safe and secure learning environment,” says Principal Terry Weeks.
Since the six cameras are wired to the internet, with the proper password, administrators and police can access the bird’s eye view from any computer with an internet connection.
In fact, 20 miles down the road we found Superintendent Linda Ingram watching the halls from her office.
She says giving first responders access will also calm concerns in an emergency.
“Not only will they be able to access what's going on in the school but also the plans of the building in case there was an intruder in the building or a fire in the building. It would help them know where things are,” says Ingram.
You can even follow a person from camera to camera as they walk through the school.
We can see Principal Weeks walk from his office, down the hall and out the back door to a classroom.
These cameras aren't just keeping an eye out for intruders, but also cutting down on discipline problems.
“Anytime kids know they're being supervised whether it's someone in person or on camera it helps the situation,” says Weeks.
When there's movement, the cameras start recording, so administrators can go back and review anything suspicious caught on tape whether that's a student skipping class or an intruder coming in the door.
Ingram says they plan to purchase 10 more cameras to cover the entire Kinston campus, then they plan to add the system at the other Coffee County Schools.
