Grimsley Sentencing

A Wiregrass man has gotten four consecutive life sentences for robbing an elderly couple and local prosecutors say they want to crack down on offenders who prey on the elderly.

Twenty-three-year-old Maurice Grimsley received the sentence when the case was tried in a Henry County courtroom on Wednesday.

The victims George and Helen Bryan told jurors they were terrorized a year ago by three armed men who beat them. Prosecutors say they seek the maximum punishment in cases like this one and that judges are tough on crimes against the elderly.

Lawmakers say elderly crimes happen all too often because some seniors have a harder time seeing, hearing and are easily intimidated. Officials say they are often too afraid to report break-ins because intruders threaten them.

District Attorney Doug Valeska also said the law needs to be changed so elderly offenders never get a chance for parole.
