The school system received a grant for $160,000 from the federal government.

The money is helping the system make much needed technology upgrades.

Students at Troy City High and Middle Schools will soon have access to top-of-line technology in the classroom.

Troy City Schools Technology Director Wayne Hubbard said, “School systems many times do not have enough money to fund technology adequately so we pursued the grants that are federal.”

The system was awarded a grant for $160,000 to help boost student development by incorporating technology into lesson plans.

Hubbard said, "We will be putting in electronic white boards, slates, document cameras, and network printers, new laptop for the teachers, student response systems, projectors and net books for the students to use."

The technology initiative is intended to make teaching more effective to directly benefit students.

Charles Henderson High School math teacher Brandon Stephens said, "We put technology in their hands and as they are learning a topic it's forcing them to pay attention and to stay engaged and all the while the clocks going to go by and they won't realize they've learned a ton of stuff. It doesn't seem like work. "

The new technology will appear in six math classes. The school system is now pursuing additional grant funding to allow them to put the same technology throughout the rest of the school system.

Troy city schools have fallen below the state average on the math portion of the graduation exam.

Administrators hope this added technology will help increase those test scores and bring them up to par with the rest of the state.
