The closure of a chicken processing plant this Wednesday will take an estimated $40 million out of the local economy and eventually will lead to the Loss of about 900 jobs. That’s according to a study done by the University of Florida.
Perdue Farms, Incorporated is moving its Defuniak Springs operation to a larger, more modern plant in Perry, Georgia. The plant is the largest private employer in the Florida Panhandle city.
Perdue Farms, based in Salisbury, Maryland, has also cut 48 local chicken growers who supplied the plant. In addition, 300 plant workers will lose their jobs, plus 580 other jobs will be lost in the area.
