The Army says its chemical weapons incinerator at the Anniston Army Depot appears to be running about three months ahead of schedule. The facility is undergoing an inspection this week.

Greg Mayhall, spokesman for the Army's Chemical Materials Agency in Aberdeen, Maryland, said despite some maintenance problems in recent months, progress at the Anniston facility has been "tremendous."

Mayhall said Tuesday the purpose of the Maryland team's visit is to make sure that national plans put in place at all of the country's incinerator facilities are being practiced at the Anniston site.

Meantime, workers are putting a cap on eight months of destroying chemical weapons. Several milestones have been reached, including the emptying of the tenth storage igloo of its chemical munitions at the depot.
