Menu Foods Head Says Contamination Positively Identified

TORONTO (AP) - The head of Menu Foods says it's still not clear how a material used to make plastic made its way into an ingredient used in the making of recalled pet food.

He says melamine was discovered in Chinese wheat gluten that was provided by a new American supplier. That supply has been discontinued.

The contamination led to a massive pet food recall.

Menu Foods has refused to name the supplier because authorities are still investigating.

FDA officials say it isn't yet clear whether the melamine was the culprit in the deaths and illnesses of hundreds or perhaps thousands of pets.
