Nuclear Power Plant

Two locations in Georgia are also in the running.

The Southern Company that owns Farley also operates nuclear power plants near Baxley and Waynesboro. The company has not committed to building the plant. But if it happens, the facility would be built at one of the existing sites.

The Southern Company is joining with six other companies to jointly apply for a license to build the first new nuclear power plant in nearly three-decades. The group will put up $7 million a year to cover the cost of the permitting process.

The community that gets the new plant will reap the rewards. The project could generate billions of dollars in capital investments and thousands of new jobs.

Power companies have not tried to get a new nuclear power plant approved since 1973. The federal government predicts that nationwide demand for nuclear power will quadruple in the next 25-years.

The group that's applying for the license actually hopes to get the permit by the year 2010.
