The Dothan-Houston County Special Olympics kicked off with a 6.2 mile torch run led by the Dothan Police Department.
Participants racked up ribbons in events like the 50 and 200 meter dash run, softball throw and wheelchair races.
Contestants of all ages lined up at the start line in hopes of taking home a win.
Houston Co. Special Olympics Coord. Elston Jones says, “There are literally over a hundred children here. We are looking forward to a good time and everyone is a winner …we are just looking forward to it.”
Some of Thursday's winners will advance to the state Special Olympics competition that will be held May 11 through the 13 in Troy.
