The newly expanded Washington County Animal Shelter officially is now open for business.
The shelter, located in Chipley, is ready to handle the skyrocketing number of stray and abandoned dogs and cats. It will be run by the county's park and recreation department.
Officials say they hope to increase the number of adoptions.
The expansion will allow animals to be kept longer before being put down.
Unfortunately, the problem of strays is not getting better. Several Panhandle communities have patterned their animal control efforts after Washington County.
Some Northwest Florida county officials say it's the right thing to do.
