A Northwest Florida police officer considers himself lucky to be alive. Officer Steven Lee was responding to a call in a Bonifay neighborhood Saturday morning when he was shot several times.
Just after 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Lee responded to a call of a homeowner shooting at trees on Banfill Avenue. Within minutes, neighbors say Dwight McWaters began firing at officer Lee. At one point, Lee was on the ground being shot by the suspect.
McWaters then exchanged gunfire with officers from inside his house. Once the Holmes County SWAT Team made entry they found the suspect unconscious inside. He reportedly had been hit several times.
Lee, a six-year veteran of the Bonifay Police Department, was shot in each leg. Witnesses say a third bullet struck him around his neck. He was airlifted to Flowers Hospital where he underwent surgery.
The suspect was taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center where he also had to undergo surgery following the shootout. The suspect reportedly has a history of mental illness.
