Public Housing Drug Elimination Program Continues

Dothan Police officials don't expect the crime rate to rise any time soon, thanks to a grant renewal with the city's housing authority.

The agreement allows for eight officers to continue patrolling problem areas through the Public Housing Drug Elimination Program.

Authorities say one of the biggest problems is with people who do not live in these areas, but hang out there.

They say drug activity is the biggest concern.

"This allows us to focus on certain areas where we may have a problem. And more than anything, this is a preventative measure; just the fact that those officers are out there walking, talking to the residents and they know we're there. It prevents that activity from going on," said Major Nick Monday of Dothan Police Department.

This grant has been in effect for about 10 years and even allows for police patrols to have office stations in these areas.
