Alabama GOP Senator Jeff Sessions says he's open to changing the constitutional amendment that he has been supporting to simply define marriage as between a man and a woman.
Currently the second sentence of that proposal would say it is up to the states to decide if they will allow civil unions to gay couples. Critics contend the clause would put civil unions and marriage on the same legal plateau and perhaps diminish the importance of marriage.
Sessions also said its important to do it now, before the issue becomes even more confused by the courts and rejects the idea that a definition of marriage should not be in the US Constitution.
