That’s because Perdue will close its chicken processing plant in Defuniak Springs and it’s closure will have a dramatic impact on the area economy.
Besides the employees, chicken producers in Florida and Alabama will lose millions of dollars and the company is Defuniak Springs largest customer of natural gas.
At less than three-percent, Walton County’s unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the state.
At this time, the agriculture extension services in Florida and Alabama are trying to organize a meeting in April for chicken producers to deal specifically with possible new career paths.
