1 dead in N.C. adult care home fire

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The fire that killed a man residing at an adult care home in North Carolina scorched the front of the one-story brick building. Gaping holes in the roof expose torched furniture and twisted metal.

Investigators aren't sure what started the fire.

A housekeeper at Davie Place Residential Care says she is "just in pieces."

About 50 residents were in the home when fire broke out about ten pm last night. Four were critically injured.

State health official Jim Jones says he doesn't know if the facility had any prior violations. The adult care home had to be inspected and licensed. It offers a lower level of care than what's offered at nursing homes.

Nineteen residents have been treated at hospitals. Two police officers were also treated for smoke inhalation.

Residents who didn't need treatment have been taken to another nearby center.
