Gay Marriage Poll

A new poll suggests there's still opposition to gay marriage throughout California -- but that support is rising.

The poll by the San Francisco-based Public Policy Institute of California suggests support for same-sex marriage has gone up in the state -- but that a majority of residents still oppose it.

Statewide, 44 percent of those surveyed support gay unions -- up from 38 percent in 2000. The survey says 58 percent of San Francisco Bay Area residents surveyed approve of same-sex weddings.

The city has stirred controversy by granting hundreds of gay marriage licenses in defiance of a state ban.

The poll showed clear partisan lines, with 57 percent of Democrats but just 23 percent of Republicans supporting gay marriage. More than two-thousand adults were polled earlier this month.
