Hathaway Bridge

A famous piece of Panama City history is now in pieces at the bottom of Saint Andrews Bay.

With a loud boom and a huge plum of black smoke, the main span of the old Hathaway Bridge fell into the bay at around 9:45 Wednesday morning.

The bridge has been part of the Panama City landscape for 44 years but, it only took a matter of seconds to bring it down.

The old Hathaway Bridge makes way for the new bridge with two spans and double the capacity.

Steel from the old bridge's frame will be recycled. And the rest will be turned into an artificial reef.

The new bridge should be completely finished and opened to all traffic by the end of next month.
