A proposed bill in the Alabama Legislature is threatening funding in several Wiregrass counties. The measure would take back TVA dollars.
TVA funds are monies paid by the Tennessee Valley Authority's power plant in North Alabama. The payment is in place of property taxes. It’s given to counties that don't allow the sale of alcohol.
There are some two-dozen Alabama counties that ban alcohol sales and Geneva County is one of those.
In that county alone, it amounts annually to more than $200,000. That sum is split evenly between the county and its cities.
State Representative Warren Beck of Geneva, says he plans to do all he can to make sure lawmakers don’t kill the TVA appropriation.
Representative Beck says he doesn't believe the TVA funds will be cut by the Legislature.
