Dothan city commissioners are voting on a bill that would legalize draft beer sales, but now that bill could be dead before it’s ever introduced in the legislature.
The bill is not just to legalize draft beer in Dothan, but in all of Houston County and without a vote of the people.
Houston county commissioners were preparing to vote on the same bill, but Sen. Harri Anne Smith says she's had a lot of calls opposing the measure and she's insisting that residents have a right to vote on it.
That could keep the current bill from ever coming out of committee and local officials see no point in backing a bill that has no future.
Local bills traditionally need the unanimous support of their legislative delegations just to get out of committee.
