Gay Marriage In California

The mayor of San Francisco is defending his city's defiance of state law.

Under the order of Mayor Gavin Newsom, city officials are issuing marriage licenses to gay couples -- despite California's ban on same-sex marriage.

The mayor says the city is ready for a court battle over his order. A group opposed to same-sex marriage plans to ask a court for a temporary restraining order to stop the city from granting any more licenses to gay couples.

Newsom tells ABC's "Good Morning America" that laws forbidding gay couples to marry amount to discrimination. And he says granting of licenses to nearly 100 same-sex couples was part of an "extraordinary day."
