Private Water Wells

Some Dothan residents are having private wells drilled to offset a recent increase in water rates. But that's not setting too well with city leaders who will try to tackle the issue at a commission meeting Tuesday.

Some people have seen monthly water bills as high as $1,000. After putting in a private well, the bills drop by as much as $400.

The wells are for outside uses such as watering lawns and washing cars. City officials say private well drilling could need to be stopped to protect the city's aquifers and conserve water.

Keith Branton with Branton Brothers Drilling said such a moratorium would be unfair to Dothan citizens and to people who make their living by drilling private wells.

Tuesday's City Commission meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m.
