Governor's Forum

Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman and his opponent, Rep. Bob Riley met face-to-face Monday during a political forum in Montgomery.

The event was sponsored by Leadership Alabama and the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama.

The men did agree that county commissions should have more authority to address local issues without going through the legislature.

Siegelman said he's been calling for limited home rule for months, including allowing local citizens to vote to raise property taxes for schools.

Paying for quality public education has been an on going issue in the election.

Both candidates also called for a study on Alabama's tax structure, including sales, income and property taxes, with a goal of making the state's taxes fairer.
