If you need to pay a speeding ticket or check on a case at the Houston County Courthouse, you need to plan to do it early in the day.
The Houston County Circuit Clerk's Office has begun closing to the public one hour early. Employees are not heading for home, they are trying to cope with a backlog of work.
The clerk's office was forced to layoff one-third of its staff back in November because of state budget problems. Since that time, fewer employees have been trying to do the same amount of work. Presiding Judge Lawson Little authorized the early closing.
Judge Little says he'll reevaluate the early closing move in a few months to see if it’s working.
