Talk of a longtime Northwest Florida plant closing has hundreds of people across the Tri-States concerned.
The Perdue Poultry Plant in Defuniak Springs employs 400 people and that doesn't include the chicken producers in Florida and Alabama. Officials at Perdue’s corporate office in Maryland, deny any shutdown -- on the streets, there's a different story.
Last week, Perdue spent $45-million for a poultry processing plant in Perry, Georgia.
Several poultry producers in Geneva County say that they've been told that the company will focus on the Georgia plant and the Defuniak Springs facility may eventually be phased out.
Corporate officials deny it, however, they will be doing a cost analysis of all 18 of their plants in ten states. Cutbacks are expected.
Walton County has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Florida; officials say the Perdue Plant is one reason why.
