The Houston County School Board voted Monday evening to accept a loan of nearly a quarter of a million dollars from the Houston County Commission.
Commissioners offered the money instead of granting the school board's request to impose a one-cent sales tax increase to fund education.
School Superintendent Kenneth Lord told board members the county commission is generously giving the board plenty of time to re-pay the loan and the $240,000 will come in handy, especially if there's another shortage of education funds at the state level.
Houston County School Board Members decided to delay taking any action on a possible property tax increase for education.
The Dothan City School Board has called for a special property tax referendum on a proposed $3 million increase to be held Sept. 10.
The County School Board has the same option, but Lord recommended that board members take a "wait and see" attitude.
