Student Pilot Injured in Helicopter Crash

COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) - A student pilot has been injured in a helicopter crash at the Covington Municipal Airport in Newton County.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration -- Kathleen Bergen -- says the pilot was making his first solo flight when the Robinson R-44 crashed about 9:30 am Monday.

Bergen says the pilot had lifted off and was hovering about ten feet in the air when he lost control, and the helicopter crashed on its side.

She says the pilot -- whose name has NOT been released -- was alone in the helicopter and was seriously injured.

Bergen says the helicopter was registered to Heli Flight LLC in Social Circle.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash -- the second helicopter crash in metro Atlanta in three days.

A crash in adjacent Walton County on Saturday killed a 64-year-old pilot and his passenger.
