Toy Box Fatality

A former police officer is dead and another man is in jail after an altercation early yesterday morning at a Dale County nightclub.

Police say the suspect intentionally crashed his truck into the building, killing the victim.

It happened at the "Toy Box Too" on Highway 231 in Newton. It remains closed because of structural damage.

Police say a customer and a bouncer got into an altercation just after midnight yesterday. The man was told to leave and he did but police say he came back about an hour later.

50-year-old Charles May, who was running the club at the time, was crushed by falling debris and later pronounced dead at a Dothan hospital. May was a Montgomery police officer from 1982 to 1992. He retired for medical reasons.

34-year-old Grady L. Hayes of Ozark is in the Dale County Jail charged with murder and felony murder.

Police impounded his truck with part of the wall of the damaged building still in the bed of the truck.
