American Red Cross Needs Blood Donors

The Alabama Extension Service has been holding blood drives for a sick child of one of its employees.

Recently, 7-year-old Sam Andress contracted E.coli from an unknown source. At one point his kidneys shut down.

Part of the treatment involves blood transfusions.

Red Cross officials say blood supplies are at a critical level statewide.

"Sam is recovering now, but there are sick children and adults who need blood transfusions. It’s truly giving the gift of life. We need up to 700 units of blood per day," said Cassandra Williams.

Sam Andress has been released from Children's Hospital in Birmingham and is recovering at home.
