Investigators now say a 15-year-old Niceville girl who was first thought to have been kidnapped actually ran away with a would-be boyfriend.
An Amber Alert was issued Monday for Janelle Angelea Adkins after her parents reported her missing from their home. She was found unharmed Tuesday in Troy, Alabama, and returned to her parents.
Investigators say the teen ran away with 23-year-old Alex Gonzalez after her parents had forbidden her to date him. They say she staged things to look like an abduction.
Gonzalez, who was arrested in Slocomb, Alabama, told investigators where to find the girl after he was detained Tuesday. He's being returned to Florida to face charges of interfering with child custody and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Penalties range from probation to five years in prison for the more serious child custody charge. The two met while working at a Mexican restaurant that burned down in September.
