The Auburn University Trustee Board named Ed Richardson as interim president of Auburn University. He replaces William Walker who resigned from his post Friday.
Gov. Bob Riley, who attended the trustee meeting, said the board will launch a search for a permanent president. The 64-year-old Richardson, who served as state School Superintendent for nine years, said he will NOT seek to become the university's permanent president.
His selection came despite concerns voiced by some faculty members that the process of choosing Auburn's leader needed to be more deliberate and open because of the problems cited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in putting the university on one-year probation.
Richardson, who takes office Monday, said he would resign from his job as superintendent at the state school board's meeting tomorrow (Thursday) and expects Deputy Superintendent Joe Morton to replace him on at least an interim basis.
