Peanut Butter Recall

By  |

A warning is out about two brands of peanut butter. The FDA says consumers should not eat certain jars of Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter. They’ve been linked to cases of salmonella in 39 states, including Alabama.

A mass recall is underway for all varieties of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter, beginning with the product code 2111. The product is believed to contain salmonella, a bacterium that infects the lining of the small intestine and can cause serious health problems.

Dr. Van Baker, with the Southeast AL Medical Center says, "Approximately 40,000 people get sick and 600 die each year from salmonella, although those are the exception, not the rule."

Those most at risk include the elderly, very young and individuals with underlying illnesses like diabetes and HIV.

Doctors say there are a number of symptoms indicating you might be infected with salmonella.

Baker says, "The symptoms of salmonella are headache, weakness, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, and a malaised look."

Doctors say you shouldn't be concerned unless you are exhibiting the majority of these symptoms.

While cases of salmonella are common in the United States, this incident associated with peanut butter is extremely rare.

Randy Griggs, AL Peanut Producers executive director says, "As far as peanut butter is concerned this is the first we've had a recall from salmonella. I've been in the business 25 years and this is the second recall I believe we've had."

While the FDA investigates the ConAgra production plant to find the origin of the salmonella contamination, the plant will remain shut-down.

Already, federal health officials say more than 300 cases of salmonella have reported, about 20 percent of those infected had to be hospitalized. So far, no deaths directly resulting from this round of salmonella have been reported.

Doctors say if you show symptoms of salmonella for more than four days, or become dehydrated, you should seek medical attention.

To get a refund, consumers should send lids and their names and addresses to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103.
