Water Rates Public Forum Update

Updated: Fri 1:03 PM, Jul 12, 2002

The City Commission voted back in April to increase the rates after a study showed that current rates weren't covering the cost of operations.

A representative from the firm that conducted the study was on hand to show residents their findings.

Once the bills came out showing the increase, many residents were surprised by how much more they were paying.

Some residents say there rates went up as much as 300 percent and they say they were misled about how much their rates were going to go up.

Dothan Utilities Manager Jimmy Kilgore said they would review each person's comments and possibly propose changes to the rates.

He said some possibilities are to maintain the 10,000-gallon rate all the way to 50,000 gallons, and give senior citizens a break.

He said they will present the changes to the commission to vote on a later date.
