MARIANNA, Fla. (AP) - A sheriff's wife fatally shot outside the couple's home was remembered Saturday as a kind friend, a good mother and a loyal worker.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers from all over Florida joined thousands of friends in a final tribute to 51-year-old Mellie McDaniel.
The wife of Jackson County Sheriff John McDaniel was killed Tuesday by a pair of men who followed her home, where she was fatally shot along with Deputy Harold Michael Altman.
The gunmen were identified as Lionel Sands and Daniel Brown. Authorities shot and killed those two men, too.
It isn't known what their ultimate plan was.
