Cotton Tour

farm

Afternoon thunderstorms and a decline in disease infestation are making Wiregrass farmers happy.

Area growers took part in the annual Coffee and Geneva County Cotton Field Tour.

It's a hands-on learning experience and several Auburn University cotton specialists talked about the latest research. There are several new herbicides and pesticides on the market.

Although this year's crop looks good, making a profit from it may be a different story. A surplus of domestic and foreign cotton will keep prices down.

In fact, one agriculture economist said producers may be lucky if they break even.

Monday's tour included a half-dozen stops for about two dozen growers.

Cotton is a $100 million crop for farmers in Geneva and Coffee counties.
