The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce supports the city's current form of government. This decision comes after months of careful consideration by the chamber board.
The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce 32 member board unanimously passed a resolution affirming the chamber's support of the current city manager form of government.
This decision comes after former Dothan Mayor Kenneth Everett presented a petition with 2400 registered voters' signatures to change the form of government to strong mayor form.
Melia McKean with the Dothan Chamber of Commerce said, “This means the city can go forward and be prosperous.”
The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce recently conducted a business climate survey asking chamber members their thought on the current form of city government.
The chamber also conducted meetings with current Dothan Mayor Pat Thomas and former Mayor Everett.
Mayor Thomas says he's delighted by the chambers announcement.
Dothan is awaiting the attorney general's opinion as to the legality of the petition.
If the attorney general says the petition's legal, before Dothan resident's vote, the mayor says he has a job to do. “We have to educate the people on the differences in the form of government and let the people choose,” he said.
The chamber will be backing the current city manager form of government. City officials are hoping for the attorney general's decision by the middle of February.
