A former Fort Walton Beach police officer is getting a life prison term for killing his ex-wife outside a day care center as she dropped off their three-year-old daughter.
It was the only possible sentence for Ronald Barnicoat of Niceville, who was convicted last month of first-degree murder. The state had previously decided not to seek the death penalty.
Circuit Judge Robert Barron has denied a defense request that Barnicoat serve his sentence in an Oregon prison, so he could be closer to family. He has also rejected a request for a new trial.
Barnicoat is also getting a 25-year sentence for discharging a firearm in the act of committing a felony.
