United Way of Central Alabama has exceeded the amount it raised last year, putting it in elite company.

Campaign Chairman C. Alan Martin said of the top 36 United Ways in the nation, those raising $25 million or more, only three have been able to do what they did last year.

Martin, executive vice president of Alabama Power Company, said the more than $31.6 million goal has been exceeded by raising more than $31.7 million since the fund drive began Sept. 4.

That represents a 2.3-percent increase from last year.

Martin praised his team of volunteers, including the Alexis de Tocqueville Division, a group that solicits contributions of $10,000.

The funds are needed to offset cutbacks in federal and state financial support for health and human service agencies.

United Way of Central Alabama raises money for 80 such groups in Jefferson, Shelby, Walker, Blount and St. Clair counties.
