The nation's first genetically engineered household pet may make it to fish tanks near you sooner than expected.
Austin-based Yorktown Technologies is marketing the Florida-grown fluorescent zebra fish. It says 5-D Tropical and Segrest Farms will begin shipping limited numbers of the fish because of high consumer demand.
The GloFish are supposed to become available nationwide on Jan. 5.
The Food and Drug Administration has decided not to regulate the fish because they aren't meant to be eaten, and they don't pose a threat to the food supply.
