Coffee County’s new chief law enforcement officer is looking for ways' to generate additional operating money.
Sheriff Dave Sutton says the jail is in desperate need of repair, but he wants to stay within budget.
With help from the area's state legislative delegation, the sheriff would like more leeway from Montgomery on how he spends money generated from the work release program.
Sheriff Sutton told the county commission that restriction by the Alabama Department of Corrections limits how funds can be spent. “We are currently at 25-percent and we are going to ask for money to go back into the general fund, the jail fund that will go back into that jail," he said.
By a 6-to-1 vote, the county commission voted to spend additional funds on correcting the most severe jail issues.
