Geneva Levee Restoration Dispute

A 10-million dollar levee restoration project was completed in Geneva 2-years-ago. But disputes between property owners and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been ongoing.

Geneva's city attorney says the last land dispute has finally been settled.

In all, some 70 property owners received federal money for their land.

In most instances, the property owner wanted more than what was initially offered by the government.

Geneva City Attorney John Knowles says. “We finally bought out all the property that was adjoining the levee. This is good for Geneva, and allowed us to prevent any future condemnation proceedings"

In 2000, the U.S. Congress allocated nearly 24-million dollars to do necessary repairs to levees in both Geneva and Elba.
