Arson Investigation

Arson is suspected in a fire that damaged a Hale County Bank Sunday -- where election records were being kept.

The fire heavily damaged the main branch of People's Bank of Greensboro, where all records from the June 4 Democratic Primary were stored inside a bank vault. The records were placed there for safekeeping during an investigation of absentee ballot irregularities.

The bank's president said it won't be known if the records were destroyed until the metal vault cools down so that it can be opened. That could take several days.

Greensboro's police chief said the fire appears to have started near a hole that was found in the roof.
