Researchers are closely watching what happens to the volunteer who got the first human inoculation of an experimental vaccine against Ebola.
The researchers with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases today gave the volunteer a part of an experimental vaccine used on monkeys.
Ebola causes extensive internal bleeding and rapid death. It is highly infectious. No effective treatment exists.
The director of the infectious disease institute says an effective vaccine would save lives in countries where the disease occurs naturally. And he says it would discourage use of the virus as an agent of bioterrorism.
