Houston County school board officials are considering a proposal to use work-release inmates to help do maintenance.
During last night's school board meeting, Houston County community corrections officials discussed using inmates as part of their community service obligations.
Under the plan, only inmates not convicted of sex crimes would be allowed to work on school grounds.
They would perform tasks in the evening such as painting and lawn care.
Superintendent Kenneth Lord says the proposal would help the school system since they would only be required to provide transportation and supervision for the inmates.
If approved, the inmates would begin work in February.
The board will vote on the plan in the next few weeks.
