For 3 years in a row, the Dothan Kiwanis Club has been giving the city a chance to celebrate Independence Day with a bang.

"For the Kiwanis club, this is a jewel in our crown. we love doing this, we love putting it on for the community, for families, giving them something to do here in Dothan for the 4th of July- celebrating our nation's birth" says Kerry Farrell, Event Coordinator.

Thousands are expected to make it to the event, which is why the Dothan Police department, Alabama State Troopers, and the Houston County Sheriff's Department are pitching in to make sure traffic flows smoothly.

"We have officers out on Highway 231, similar to what the Peanut Festival entails. Stopping traffic and getting the flow out" says Sgt. Todd David of Dothan Police Department.

Activities have been going on all day as well the chance to buy souvenirs and refreshments, but there is one thing not permitted on the site and that's alcohol; though that doesn't stop some from trying to disobey the law and attempt to sneak their own in.

"Occasionally that happens. We strongly discourage it. Alcohol is not permitted out here. We are trying to keep this a fun family event" says Sgt. David.

People came out at 10 am Saturday morning to enjoy food, friends, and fun. They are waiting for the big fireworks finale at dusk.

"We paid 12 thousand dollars to have this show put on. It's a 15 minute show, but it's a solid 15 minutes with a wonderful finale. We have some of the largest fireworks in southern Alabama" says Farrell.

100 % of the profit made from the event goes back into the community through donations made from the Kiwanis Club to charitable organizations.

The Kiwanis Club hopes to make 27 thousand dollars from this event.
