The state fire marshal has halted any prisoners being transferred into the recent addition of the Covington County Jail.
The 50-bed, fiberglass addition was designed to house inmates assigned to the Work Release Program.
Jail Administrator Wilbur Mitchell says the state has told him that the facility needs a fire suppression system that includes a sprinkler system.
Covington County’s 10-year-old jail was designed with a maximum capacity of 140 inmates. The facility is holding nearly 200.
"Still, when you are dealing with a government agency, you have to be patient. We will follow the orders of the fire marshal, and I expect prisoners will soon occupy it," said Mitchell.
The state fire marshal has also placed restrictions on the Geneva County Jail.
